Auto Resize Windows Media Player

You can automatically adjust the size of a video or DVD you are watching in Windows Media Player. For example, you might want to adjust the Player so it will open to.

Right click the shortcut for Media Player and select Properties/Shortcut tab.

In the Run line, use the drop down menu to select the Maximized option.

That still didn t work. When I open it, it is still in a very small size.

It should should re-open in the same size as when it was last closed.

Nver have see this before. All other folders/programs retain the last closed size.

If I might clarify this problem a little. If I load MP from my taskbar, it does indeed appear immediately in full-screen.

However, if I load MP by double left clicking a video file, it initially appears as a small version and I have to click the fullscreen tab to enlarge it.

I can t right click the MP shortcut as i don t have nor need one.

I share Waldoni s frustration with Windows 7.

I totally have the same problem with x64 Win7 Ultimate, all updates installed.

The tip to set Media Player Default Window Size to maximize, does work for the inital opening, which is in most cases the media library. After I choose the media to watch, the player switches to playmode and I have a different sizes again.

This is really anoying. Hope there will be a solution which remembers the window size.

I totally agree with all users:

The task bar and start menu shortcuts should retain the same size and position as the last time the window was closed in every display mode.

It seems it does in Library CTRL 1 mode, but not in Appearance CTRL 2 mode, only the position is remembered, but the size is ridiculously small.

I think this is a bug that can t be fixed with a user workaround, it needs a Microsoft update.

Also annoying, as already reported in this thread, the Playback CTRL 3 mode window appears in a ridiculously small size too, previous size and position should also be memorized by the system. Where has all the Intellisense spirit gone.

First, let me apologize because clearly no one else here knows what you re experiencing :

The trouble is actually a feature:  If you open a file like a video directly, WMP will open directly to the

Now Playing screen to show the video video can t be displayed in the Library mode where it lists all files.   This is locked, you cannot change this behavior because I m sure you d agree, everyone would complain if they couldn t see a video being

played every time they played one, of course.

But what you can do, it still WMP to always be the size you want.

2   While the video is playing, right-click anywhere in the video and uncheck the Fit Player to Video option.

WMP will no longer try to adjust its size every time a video is played.

With a billion users, a one-in-a-million problem still happens a thousand times a day.

I already had Fit Player to Video unchecked.  And well, I don t have the problem that the video is ridicously small as some users above. The video opens pretty big, but still slighty smaller as I closed it before. Also the window position changes on a random

base. Sometimes window opens and the left border and some inches of video is left out of screen.

If anyone is still stuck on this here s how to fix it:

1. Make sure Fit player to window is not checked Right-click video screen, click Video, click Fit player

2. Open an MP3 file ALT-File-Open-navigate to file.

This does work but now the window size is always the same as when you opened and closed the MP3 file. Surely it can t be that hard to remember the window size that you last used for playing a video. Windows XP always did it correctly.

Please see my answer on the first page of this question here.  Using

that option will make Media Player remember the last size used instead of resizing when opened.

I tried this but it had no effect.

All I want to do is be able to double left click on a music or video file and have WMP open in Now Playing this feature works AND maximized. this does not

You can make it opened maximized, but not full screen.  In other words, your taskbar and the title at the top of the screen will be visible.

You can use a command line switch to start Windows Media Player in full screen mode.  To do this for a single instance, provide the name of the file you want to play along with the Media Player command.  Example:

wmplayer c: users shawn desktop sound.mp3 /fullscreen

An advanced option would be to edit the registry for MP3 or any other file type so that it always includes the /fullscreen option when you double-click a file.

Thanks Shawn. Hang with me. My bad on that previous post. Maximized will be just fine thank you. I failed to note the distinction between this and full screen but understand the difference. Wording in previous post now edited. I would like all MP3 and

WMV files to open maximized every time. I do not posses sufficient coolness to tamper with the registry.

It is supposed to always open in the same size/shape it was in last time it was used.  In testing though I just discovered this works fine with audio mp3, wma files, it does not appear to work with video. As you described, even if not maximized, the

next launch from a video file returns to the smallest-possible size.  I am shocked I ve never noticed this myself.

Looking at the registry, the command used to open both MP3 sound and AVI movie files seems identical.  Then, inexplicably, all my videos started opening at the last used size.

Further investigating led me to discover where the size is stored:

HKEY_CURRENT USER Software Microsoft MediaPlayer Player SKins res://wmploc/rt_text/player.wsz

That s right the Now Playing mode is nothing more than a skin, used since Windows Media Player 6. in Windows Me edition.  Interesting.

It appears that the height and width settings aren t updated when you switch away from or close the skin.  You can define them in this registry setting but that s not recommended.

long story short, I think this is a genuine bug.

Fair enough. I trust you will file the appropriate report. In the mean time, I have discovered that ALT-ENTER will maximize the window, although I never had to do this before I upgraded to WMP 12. Will look forward to WMP 13 with breathless anticipation.

Thanks for your involvement. It was hard for me to believe, as a mid-level user, that Redmond had screwed up and not me. It is a continuing source of frustration, that in the process of piling on all kinds of highly complicated and marginally useful features,

basic functionality gets overlooked.

To other readers: Butch means just what he says, RESZE the window, as in dragging the borders. Windows will then remember that size and position. I tried to MAXIMIZE the window, and Windows for reasons not clear to me will not remember this.

This worked for me. I thought unchecking Fit player to window would work by itself, but it didn t. Thanks for the MP3 trick.

I m running Windows 7, Home Premium, 64bit, completely fresh install and NONE of the suggested solutions work.  I ve set the Run window to Maximize, Unchecked BOTH Fit selections in Video, double clicked on the Icon holding the Shift Key.  Nothing works.

I will say on the 32bit version on the old drive, WMP worked fine, except for not displaying the picture correctly, but that s another story.

Is there a solution for this problem.  It s 6 years later.  I hope there s something
